MecoS Has Officially Started

Manchester European City Of Science 2016 has begun in fine style with some avian visitors perking the interest of the Manchester areas’ ecologists

January 1st is traditionally a big day in the ecologists’ year with birdwatchers starting their year lists afresh and as a result many birders were in the field in the Manchester area on 01/01/16

Great Northern Diver is the bird of the moment with two of these spectacular birds gracing our waters – one on the Salford Docklands, favouring the smaller areas of water such as St Peters and Ontario, and a long-staying bird on Audenshaw Reservoir

Willow Tits are a speciality that birders flock in to see at sites such as Pennington Flash, a site that also hosts the elusive Water Rail

Goldeneyes are a symbol of Salford as these gorgeous ducks fly in from Iceland to the River Irwell, a river that has made national headlines due to severe flooding

The floods have brought climate change into sharp focus and sets a theme for MecoS, just how do we deal with climate change and the economy
