Salford Bird News Review Of The Year 2014

The highlights of the year were Crane, Little Egret, Mediterranean Gull, Whinchat, Marsh Harrier, Pintail, Greenshank, Green Sandpiper, Raven, Brambling, Jack Snipe, Pochard, Grasshopper Warbler, Turnstone, Hobby, Merlin, Cuckoo, Iceland Gull, Corn Bunting, Golden Plover, Garden Warbler, Peregrine and a possible Marbled Duck 

Willow Tits are a speciality of Salford, and were seen at several sites during the year, including Salford Mosses, Boothstown and Blackleach Country Park

Birds of prey were a feature of the year with a female Marsh Harrier on the Mosses, and many sightings of Peregrine, Merlin and Hobby


Some interesting duck sightings – a possible Marbled Duck at Worsley was potentially a first for Britain, but the identity was not confirmed, a drake Pochard was found on Salford Docklands on 1st staying until 24th March, with counts of 4 Wigeon, 58 Tufted Duck and 7 Gadwall at Blackleach, 14 Teal at Princes Park

A Stonechat was seen along the Bridgewater Canal at Boothstown and on the Moss, male Merlin, 2 Raven and 2 Green Sandpipers


Jack Snipe and 3 Brambling at Worsley, Raven at Boothstown, pair of Shelduck at Croxdens, 12 Pochard, 44 Tufted Duck & 9 Goosander at Blackleach, 50 Tufted Duck at Princes Park, 2 Pochard, 9 Gadwall, 25 Teal and 30 Tufted Duck at Clifton Country Park


Crane over Worsley, 1 Dunlin and 17 Golden Plover on the Moss and a displaying pair of Mediterranean Gulls at New Manchester


2 Little Egrets, 1 Ringed Plover, 2 Shelduck and 2 Gadwall on Croxden Pools,  2 Corn Buntings on Chat Moss, 2 Ravens over Boothstown and a singing male Reed Warbler at Salford Docklands


Whinchat, plenty Wheatears and 15 Goosander at Salford Docklands, female Marsh Harrier on the Mosses, Garden Warbler, Reed Warbler and 2 Common Terns @ Blackleach and Garden Warbler @ Boothstown


Grasshopper Warbler at Barton and 500 Swifts @ Weaste ETW


Little Egret, Marsh Harrier, Green Sandpiper, Grasshopper Warbler, Turnstones on the Moss and 2 Ring-necked Parakeets on Whit Lane


Whinchats, Greenshank, 7 Ravens, Ringed Plover and an escaped Red-tailed Hawk at Croxdens on The Moss and a Tawny Owl in Buile Hill Park


Tree Pipit, 2 Wheatear & Mediterranean Gull @ Docklands, several sightings of Greenshank (including a flock of 4) and Green Sandpipers on The Moss


Raven, drake Pintail, 8 Egyptian Geese and 2-3 Stonechats on Docklands,  Water Rail and Knot at Blackleach Country Park, 2 Shovelers at Worsley, 20 Goosander at Clifton Country Park and Bramblings on Barton Moss


Little Egret, male & female Merlin, Corn Bunting and Stonechat on the Moss, 12 Wigeon and 20 Gadwall on Clifton Country Park


Possible Mealy Redpoll at Princes Park, 2 Grey Partridge at Boothstown, 2 Ring-necked Parakeets seen in Weaste, male Blackcap on Liverpool Street, Pintail and 2 Gadwall at Blackleach Country Park, 40 Teal and 2 Shovelers at Worsley, Iceland Gull, 14 Tufted Duck, 3 Redshank and at least 2 Chiffchaffs on Salford Docklands, drake Pintail, a pair of Wigeon, 1 Chiffchaff and 2 pairs of Stonechats on The Moss
